Scrumptious apple tree.

Good morning folks, I'm in the mood today for adding to my apple tree collection, i already have discovery, falstaff, kelly, & a couple of james grieves. I'm thinking of adding scrumptious. from what i know about the tree it should be ok for our climate. I'm in aberdeen scotland. before going out and buying i thought id ask if any of you guys living in the north east of scotland have experience of growing this tree. and hows it going?

Nowhere near as far north as you but I find mine does very well and is situated next to my Falstaff.

I have one, I am in the borders and mine is doing really well, had lots of fruit off it last year and it's still a small tree

I had a Scrumptious and it had problems every year with scab. This was in Nottingham, so not the wettest part of the country. I understand it rains a lot in north west Scotland?

Also, for me there was a hint of anise to the flavour, which I personally liked but isn't normally advertised when you buy it. Orangepippin agrees with me:

The flavour is sweet but not sugary - there is a balancing acidity. Although not a hard apple, the flesh snaps cleanly when you bite into it, again rather like a good Golden Delicious. We have also noticed, occasionally, a very slight aniseed flavour.* Don't let this put you off, as it is more of a background sensation than an actual flavour, but it is part of the reason why Scrumptious has more depth of flavour than other early varieties.

thanks for your reply guys, and glad to hear your trees are doing fine, well i had to change my plans today and didn't end up visiting a garden centre, shame because it was quite a nice day here today weather wise.

oh well maybe next weekend i shall spend some time in my garden.

Interesting Chris, I've not had any scab problems or noticed the anise flavour. Will pay special attention this autumn to see if I can detect anything.

I hope I haven't ruined Scrumptious for you now! My wife said I ruined it for her when I pointed it out because it went from something she'd never noticed to something she noticed every time she had one. And she isn't a fan of anise...
