Goji Berry Plants

Forgot to tell you all that whilst in B&Q last weekend I wandered into the garden centre and looked to see what had come in. Came across some red gooseberry plants and saw there was a 3 for £10 (they are only small plants) and was tempted.

Picked two up then noticed a Goji berry plant with the same sticker on in the same place, had never heard of it but bought one anyway so got all 3 for £10. Looked it up when I got back home and found it was a 'super fruit' according to mr google. Went back and bought 2 more and another red goosegog to make 3 of each. I'll let you know later if they fruit and what they taste like but don't know if the plants are too small to get anything off them this year.

I grew some goji plants a couple of years ago. Grew great but never any fruit. Gave up on them. One thing I can tell you - cut off any six inch branch or twig from any of the plants and literally stick them into the ground. They start growing straight away. They really propagate so very very easily.

Mine is in its 3rd year and has grown extremely vigorously - but I've had no fruit from it so its under a stay of execution this year as I believe I read that you might have to give them a 2 or 3 years before they bear fruit.

I bought a Goji berry plant about six years ago, it didn't do nothing in the first three years, it is now 8 ft tall, and has been producing fruit for last three years I have it staked in the garden, gave it a good pruning last year for the first time, but it is no hassle, I don't feed or water it. I don't think they like water logged soils

I put in a few Goji plants several years ago.
They grow very vigorously despite the shallow infertile soil - reminiscent of the vigour, untidiness and spreading nature of brambles (Gojis sometimes have a few thorns too). They will sometimes 'take' from cuttings.

The older stems produce plenty of small lilac-purple-tinged flowers in the summer but never any berries.

If mine don't start producing berries within a couple of years they will be removed.

Planted a Goji berry 3 years ago. got nothing but loads of arching growth. I was about to throw it out when I read that to get fruit they should be treated lean and mean. I have replanted it in the gravel at the edge of my car park space at the front where it will get maximum sun and minimum nutrient. It has sprouted already so they don't die easily. I wouldn't plant them in a fruit area.

Good thing is that you can also eat the leaves of the goji berry plant.

The slugs also love the leaves or at least mine! This year is going to be the third one I try to grow the same plant as it gets decimated but slugs every time.. let's see how it does

I've had one in a large patio tub for 3 or 4 years, but rarely have had any fruit on it.

There's varying advice I've read about what pH the plant prefers, but some sources suggest they like higher pH. For that reason I've tried watering with tap water, even when water butt rain water is available. I don't know how much difference that makes, but at least in principle tap water might suit the plant better.

Has anyone tried adding lime?

I dug my 2 up and gave them away .I've decided for all future fruit bushes that they need to be on wheels as I'm the most idiotic and impatient person I've ever met

Recently I've been more closely looking at my Goji plants and I have seen berries forming and beginning to colour-up, but they 'disappear' before all the greenish tinge has ripened to orange.

So I'm suspecting they're being eaten by one or more of the following:
1. blackbirds
2. sparrows
3. robins
4. goldfinches
5. harvest mice
