  • Just Bought a Grape Vine. How Do I Look After It?

    Hey Folks,

I'm pretty new to gardening. Currently growing: Courgettes, pansies, sunflowers, beetroot, lilies, strawberries, raspberries, red berries, blackberries and tayberries. So far, they're all doing well apart from the pansies who aren't doing anything at the moment.

Anyway, more to the point: Today I saw this gorgeous baby grapevine and really wanted it. The type is: 'Vitis Vinifera Regent' and the only information given is that it must be in a sunny position, it flowers in May, it must be pruned Dec - Jan and harvests in Sept/ Oct.

It's currently in my greenhouse (I live in the UK so I don't want it going outside) in a large pot with multi-purpose compost. Is this the incorrect thing to do? How do I look after it properly? I want him to succeed.

Please help! :-) Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Depends which part of the UK you hail from? The generally accepted way to grow in a greenhouse is to plant it just outside and train it in. This means you don't need to worry about watering it once its established and it should grow well.
The beauty about grape vines is that they grow in the roof space of a greenhouse so you can still grow your usual crops at ground level. Darn sarf you could probably grow it outside. Outdoor vines grow ok in my area but don't produce fruit.

Hello Wild & welcome to the Jungle, this variety apparently can grow outdoors or indoors. Here's some useful information about it, just click through the various tabs:

Oh, I see! I'm in Devon

Can it possibly really be that simple?

I have a vine growing in both of my greenhouses (A black grape and a pink grape) Both do well here in North East England and are very fruitful.
I also have an outdoor vine but it rarely gives me fruit.
Try and get a seedless variety if possible if like me you don't like spitting out pips!

I know that, you know that but whatever you do, don't tell my vines that. HOWEVER THIS LOOKS INTERESTING fancy a field trip?

I'm actually quite partial to dolmas.

Just got the Regent, Romeo and Chardonnay vines - my plans for the layout of my plot have now changed so I'm replanning what to do with them.

Have you decided how you're going to train it?

I am only learning about grapes this year. Like most things it depends on what you want for the finished product. I was advised to look through u tube vids and if this is the only vine you are likely to have than I think it would be your best option. If however like me you are easily addicted to things and go a little overboard then gets some books from your local library. There seems to be a lack of small scale growing and dessert grape growing, however a lot of wine growing vine books have loads of info that is transferable so don't be put of. The following site is also very helpful for techniques, growing, dif. varieties etc. specialist vine nursery Oh and try not to feel overwhelmed it is just a plant and it is upto you what you do with it. Besides yours is suitable inside or out so not easily killed

                    Have fun with your lil'un

My vines planted outside against my shed south facing,I think it takes about 4 years before they start producing fruit unless that was the result of my pruning? I had 3 bunches of grapes last year, seedless but I thinned them to allow for time for the seeds to swell so they seem seedless but there were seeds there, don't all grapes have seeds in & then growth makes them expand, when you look inside a seedless grape you can see the jelly like seeds. There's a vineyard just up the road from me that does wine tasting you can see the vines from the road it's like being in Italy for a second.

Oh dear, have I made a mistake with my grapevine?

                            Hey folks,

About a six weeks ago I bought a 'Vitis Vinifera Regent' grapevine from a local nursery. It's very small. Here is a picture of it from today. Click on the link please --> Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet It's got marigolds around it, please ignore the weeds on the floor, haha

I read yesterday that grapevines don't do well in pots as their roots like to go very deep down... Is this true? Have I made a mistake by growing it in a pot? Should I plant it out in the same place, but in the earth instead of a pot?

I'd love your advice please, I have no idea what to do from here

                            xx

If you don't mind modifying one of your greenhouse panels, they prefer their feet in the cool & their heads in the warmth. I had a similar greenhouse on my plot & I cut a 2" hole in one of the panels, planted the grape outside then fed it through the hole so it grew inside. It all depends on the variety.
