  • Does anyone here have a peach tree?

    Hey folks,

Do any UK members have a peach tree? Peaches have always been my favourite fruit and I'd love to get a peach tree. However, I don't know the first thing about growing them, so I'd love some help.

Do peaches grow well outdoors in England? Do you grow them outdoors, or indoors? I think my greenhouse is too small for a peach tree but it could possibly go in our large conservatory which is about 9ft high.

Do you have any tips or extra info that you feel may be helpful for me?

Additional info: Devon, large south-facing garden that gets a lot of sun. However, as we're in England we also get a lot of rain which makes the soil very clay-like.

I have only got mine recently. From what I can understand the main issue is protecting from peach leaf curl which is caused by fungal spores which are worse/ aggravated when it rains. One way round it is to get patio trees (tree on dwarf stock, similar to Buy Red Leaf Peach Tree Online | Marshalls Seeds ) and keep them in pots so you can keep them undercover in cooler months and move outside in the warmer months. Another option is to train them against a wall and do a lean to type protection tunnel https://www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/profile?PID=232

      Interesting, thank you

Are you planning to grow yours outdoors? Will the fruit become fully ripe in England?

I'll check out the links now

I have terrace peach diamond and terrace peach garnet which are patio types which have been in the gh over winter hand pollinated and yesterday got booted outside will keep a few undercover space allowing. I have other peaches (which should have been nectarines I suspect something like peregrine on a dwarfing stock) I am training outside I aim to make a lean to poly tunnel for a couple but a couple will be left to their own to battle. Quite a few are carrying golf ball size fruit - pea size fruit on at the moment will have to let you know August time if they ripen

I have a friend who has a free standing peach tree and it fruited (and ripened) last year. She did get leaf curl but she spayed the tree. The chemical you used to use is now a banned, just so you know

I bought a dwarf red leaf peach from Homebase last year and keep it in a big terracotta pot in the greenhouse. I got 5 peaches last year and they were amazing, although I harvested them in October rather than July-August that's mentioned on the label. Hopefully I'll get even more this year!

I grew Peregrine on St Julien A as a fan in a 12 x 8 greenhouse, it grew like a weed and produced lots of fruit.

I root trim my peach in winter time to restrict its growth, so even though its not a patio plant, it is under 4ft from soil to top, and it is now about 7/8yrs old and producing great fruit....

I have been growing my peach tree "avalon" for 3 years outdoors as a regular tree, not trained in any way. Last year we had a bumper crop of huge peaches, this year is looking less, but almost no peach curl ever.

We bought a peregrin peach from Fruit trees for sale - Suffolk Fruit and Trees - The Fruit Tree Specialists last winter and popped it in the ground along with other trees to grow espalier style in the open. Lasty year we unexpectedly got 3 peaches and there have been blossoms this year so I expect some more. plant looks healthy so far.
