  • Seems I have a cherry tree!

When I got my allotment there was a sapling at the end.
    No-ne knew what kind.

Last year the sapling grew quite tall with a few, upward pointing branches.

I wondered if it might be a cherry but thought the leaves were too short and rounded.

    This spring the tree blossomed.
I wondered if it might be a sucker from the nearby plum tree but the blossom was different.

Now this peculiarly shaped, tall and skinny tree is just smothered in tiny fruit and I think they might be cherries
    If it is cherries I have a few questions;

Is there any way of telling if they are acid or sweet before harvest?
Are cherries suseptable to leaf curl virus?
Can plum moths make the fruit maggoty?
    and when do cherries ripen?

I'll try to get a picture and post it tomorrow.

Not that I know of. Don't forget the possibility of wild cherries.

    Nope.

I haven't known cherries to get maggots but can suffer badly from aphid on leaves and stems of fruit. Birds tend to be the biggest pest and they do taste tastes a lot (very inconsiderate they could at least eat the whole thing )

    and when do cherries ripen?
You can do a squeeze test, if it gives you can then do a taste test. When the tree is bigger you know they are ripe as the birds will kindly deposit clusters of stones here, there and everywhere. There is a row of houses near me that know when they are ripe as they make a lot of noise as they go done the chimneys

on closer inspection it is, in fact a plum tree...possibly fron the original rootstock.
The leaves are definitely plum leaves but smaller and darker than the original.

I'm a bit gutted (would have loved a cherry) but now wondering what type of rootstock was used as the fruit are only have the size of the mama trees!
