One runner can produce 3 or 4 plants. Personally I wait till I can see roots before planting but that's just me.

That's brilliant! So will root these now and when I see some growth will root the tips. Thank you!

ps: I hope Susie took some good notes! Let's see how well we succeed!

My strawberries are in towers and even my new plants are throwing out runners right now. I think I need to wait for them to reach the ground before I can plant them! Then I think I'll re-house them in the towers next year. Unless I can just poke the runners back into a spare hole and they'll take root!

It must be tricky to root the runners from a tower? That's why I will put the old plants in a hanging basket or tower next year and keep the new ones in the ground till I need to propagate them, I guess!

Although the question is, which years strawberries is best to propagate, 1st, 2nd or 3rd, or even leave them for a 4th year and propagate them then? Because now the runners are competing for nutrients and energy with the fruit, so that cant be good for the yields. So which years strawberries do you usually sacrifice?

I peg the runners down with a hairpin, one on each side of the part with the roots on. Keeps them firmly in the soil.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
