      if you tie in the unfruited stems they will fruit early next year (july/august) and finish just as the fresh growth produces, giving you from july to the frosts picking time..

        My climate is different from yours, Buffs; Joan J doesn't give me any unfruited stems. But when I cut them back in the winter, I choose a few canes that have fruited, about one cane per plant, to leave on and give an early crop. I choose canes that have healthy-looking buds on, trim them down a bit to say four feet high and tie them in. The fruit isn't quite as good as the "proper" autumn crop, but it's still good and very welcome. Because I only leave a few canes to do this, I still get plenty of fruit in the main crop later on.
