Best raspberry variety

Hello all
When i got my allotment a couple of years ago i was adamant that i wouldnt grow raspberries as i didnt them. Lo and behold now that ive actually tried a fresh ripe one i am addicted and want to grow my own. Alot of people at my plot have had them for years so dont even remember what variety. So i thought id see which ones you people would recommend for east and taste. Someone has suggested Autumn Bliss, but ive also come across Erika. Im based in London if that is important, and any suggestions would be appreciated

Also, has anyone grown / tasted Japanese Wineberries or Framberries - any thoughts taste wise on these would be appreciated.

Only one for me is Joanj,the autumn variety,easy to look after to,when they finished fruiting cut em down to the ground,next year they start up again all on their own,and no staking is needed,the only thing to do is dig up the unwanted strays,lovely big tasty berries

I am still yet to try joan j but know a lot of peeps rate them. I like all gold a yellow autumn variety and birds tend to leave mine alone they aren't big on flavour but are nice if that makes sense. Framberries are strawbs which are meant to taste like rasps but they don't,it is just the best description same as pineberries and pineapple taste. By all means grow them/try them but don't spend silly money on them.

JoanJ for me & it's a double whammy, instead of cutting them down, let them fruit in Summer on the old canes then cut the old canes out ready for an Autumn crop................

I like JoanJ too.
The yellow raspberries don't have enough flavour for me - they taste of sweet water, but maybe that' the variety I have!
Wineberries have been a bit ho-hum. Wouldn't bother to buy them.

I was aware you could cut them part way,but not leave them whole,also thought that by doing either it would cut back on the total amount produced

Oooh thanks for this!! So i wont get Autumn Bliss, but will get Joan J. I can't believe i am actually excited about Raspberries

I had a good crop off last years canes Lottie, they are now out & this years canes are about 8ft tall & bursting with fruit.

I also grow Joan J as my autumn raspberry and the flavour is superb. I grow two summer raspberries, Tulameen which has agood flavour and is a heavy cropper and Glen Coe a deep purple berry with excellent flavour.

I have a japanese wineberry, which i grow in the ornamental part of the garden as it is a much better looking plant than a raspberry. the fruit are about the size of wild raspberries, they are sweeter than raspberries but lack that aroma that raspberries have.

I started this year with 2 Tulameen summer raspberries in MFBs and got a small crop off them - bought 2 more plants (the original plants were planted out before cropping and are now flowering again - strange).

Decided to get some autumn fruiting plants and after reading quite a bit on the net plumbed for Joan J as it rates highly on flavour and, as Bigmally said, also rates high as a two timing variety (i.e. getting a summer and autumn crop)

Joan J here too. Lovely big sweet berries.

Bought a yellow raspberry this year to try. it is in a pot at the moment but it is going on the compost. No flavour.

I bought a black raspberry to try too. no fruit this year will have to wait till next year to try the berries.
