  • Raspberry experts please?

I've spent the last couple of days 'pruning ' my summer fruiting raspberries, they were in a right mess! Anyway, now they are bit pathetic and spindly, the ground is covered with dead leaves and debris, should I clear this away and give some kind of feed now! Or wait till Spring, or feed on top of the leaves and hope it filters through? I also have to rebuild some kind of structure and tie them in before the wind arrives

    Thank you

You can prune out the spent canes now Dorothy and clear all the debris away. Remember this year canes have next years fruit.
I don't feed now but you could give them a good mulch. My set up is post either end of the row with a couple of T pieces - they look like giant crosses..wire is then stretched and attached by eyelets screwed into the ends of the cross bars. Canes they get tied into the site.

Thanks, yes I have cut out all the 'brown canes' that fruited this year, but the end supports need replacing and new 'wires', like you say, I'll take out some of the debris from under, and mulch, what would be good? Should I try and get manure? Can they take fresh stuff?

Manure is fine for then Dorothy...I use it every year on mine

"Dotty" as Raspberies are very low rooted, the clearer the ground below the better, giving them a much better start for the new season! They really don't like "Competition" from anything for them to flourish n give you the best yield possible.

And clearly stated you are aware to take out the old canes n tie in the new fresh greener canes that shall bear the fruit for next year.

A little different for "Autumn Fruiting" Which ya take out at ground level.

And yes! As "Trip" said mulch with a good 3 to 4 inches of manure mulch over winter, not only does it feed, it act's as a "Radiator" keeping them warm over the colder months with them being so shallow rooted!

Have just done mine today but haven't mulched yet. What else can be used if you haven't got manure?
Also mine were a bit spindly so I cut about 18" off the tops !!!!! should I not have done this or will they still be OK?

Should have asked for advise first I know but the old brain doesn't always engage quickly nowadays.

I think they will be ok with the tops cut off...I often do that with my tulameen if the are a bit tall.
I mulch with anything I have in the compost bins, bags of half rotted leaves, old woodchips off your paths?

Yes I'm sure they will survive. I was moving plots last year and had 10 bushes in all, Glen Moy, Tulameen and Autumn Bliss. All were in pots for about a year and they have all produced really well this first year. Go for it!
