this is the converted chook house, north facing , where the apricot, peach, peppers and cuc's seem to really thrive, I reckon that as the back wall faces the sun and the ground on the other side is lower, it takes max benefit of what sun and warmth we get, I often have my lunch out there when gardening in march/april as it gets a nice temp even on iffy days, and it was done "on a shoestring", but paying off lovely..

talking about successes, has everybody had an exceptional crop of apples, I cannot believe the amount of apples we have nearing picking time, loads of bramleys and russets and the james grieve looks like it has been "festooned" but its just the weight of the crop, the only fly in the ointment is that the stump of the braeburn I grafted the russet twigs onto seems to have canker, so it may have been one of those with the infection from the outset, I did cut it 18ins below any sign of it before, but after those first time graftings taking so well I shall be digging up the roots and trying to figure out what else I can replace it with, any and all suggestions very welcome..

I got hold of some treated 3 x 2 timbers that were surplus to needs and the rest was basic woodwork, nothing fancy, cut to size, drill a hole in the cross piece and drive a 4ins screw down into the upright, some 45deg cut timbers to brace the door, with the sloping roof spars all the woodwork was done in a day and a half,on my own and now 6/7yrs on it seems to show no sign of weakness, he says, fingers crossed. now about to order some more peach
and nectarine trees and will build lower staging to keep them in the max sunlight, picked the last of the blueberries today,eaten with own blackcurrant ice cream, I know, its a hard life but someone has to do it..

this is a more recent view of the back greenhouse with the peach, apricot and peppers vaguely visible. it will be revamped inside over the winter to accommodate the extra peach/nectarine and apricot dwarfs now on order. the spent cucumber was to be evicted but has now 3 half sized fruit , growing away nicely, so with these and the late spurt of toms this has truly been a very odd year , but ending up a lot better than thought a month ago. if this winter is like the last, it could be strawberries at Christmas..

Apples...yup,hundreds of them but they are less than 1/4 of the size they should be and almost every one has become it's own wildlife habitat zone

I may move very slow now due to dodgy legs but I still have the skills gathered over the years,it is just painfully boring if you have to watch...
