  • Pear Tree Leaf

    Hi all

Must confess I'm a complete newbie to growing my own fruit and veg - although I'm proud I managed to get some raspberries and broad beans this year!

I planted an apple and pear tree in our south facing garden about 10 months ago. I've noticed that some of the leaves have got a dodgy looking brown colour to them.

I've attached a picture and would be hugely grateful to anyone who could identify what the problem is and how I can go about rescuing it!

    Thanks

    Ben

Probably pear slugworm. They look like tiny black slugs on the leaves. A healthy pear tree will tolerate moderate damage (I'd class yours as moderate).
My pears get a mild attack of them in most years but I haven't seen any this year. Looks like you got them all.

Slug worm! Now I know the name of the enemy! Thanks so much. I've also spotted a few leaves with pear rust so I think this little one may be doomed, but I'll try my best!

Mine get a bit of rust - and a bit of this, that and the other. I grow my fruit trees on vigorous rootstocks so they can withstand severe attacks without me having to defend them. Trees on dwarf rootstocks can't re-grow the damaged bits as quickly.
