  • blueberry in containers

I have a couple of bushes in pots that look healthy but they need potting on. I have a 40 gallon drum in half so plan to use that.
What should I soil wise I do have a bag of the proper compost for them. But it would be to expensive to buy more to fill the containers right up. Maybe soil from the compost heap, some pine needles and top off with Ericaceous Compost ?

Can you still get bags of peat from from authorised sources? Peat with a sprinkling of powdered ericaceous fertiliser would be a reasonably cheap option.............probably!

20 gallon is around 90lt of compost, which is really only 1.5 bags. I moved a few of my blueberry bushes into large container pots last year and filled with ericaceous compost when they were on offer 3 for £10 if I remember. The only problem I could see was being all compost it's rather light weight which made the bushes top heavy and they suffered a bit in the wind.

You could mix John Innes ericaceous [which contains soil] with cheaper ericaceous compost to counter act the top heavy effect.

Wish I'd have done that at the time... but I was penny wise pound foolish. 3 more to do this year so at least I'll get a second chance.
