Have brought a Fig tree (brown turkey)!!!!!! Any advice?

So after recent questions we have opted for a Purple Filbert (thank you TrixC) & Brown Turkey Fig Tree as we had two spots available....

Any suggestions/advice on planting and care or anyone who have one of these at home...
Will keep Fig in a pot as I understand it 'spreads' was going to put in the ground with pot but do I understand it might be better to bring it inside a greenhouse or cover outside? Prune Spring and thin fruit in September if small and not going to form fully?

The Filbert will be next to my cherry blossom and Fig to an Acer but both will have the correct distance between trees....

Any growing, pruning, harvesting tips welcome!!!!!

I have my brown turkey in a large pot buried in the ground outside.


At this time of year you need to pull off any figs bigger than a pea as they won't make it though the winter.

I have a Brown Turkey fig hedge! Despite being planted between 2 brick walls, about a foot apart, it has spread sideways and, wherever these branches touched the ground, they have rooted.
This year, I gave up on selective pruning and attacked it with the hedgetrimmer!

Its easy but you need to make your search specific.
So threads about Figs should be in Feeling Fruity.
Feeling Fruity
At the top of the posts on the right "Search Forum" and "Advanced search".
That brings up lots of ways to restrict your search but searching for "Figs" in the Feeling Fruity Forum brings up 157 threads about figs.

It may be a bit early for you but this is a good clip on pruning, which I wish I'd found a lot earlier. You'd be surprised how fast figs grow even with restricted roots. The Rouge de Bordeaux in my 10X12 has hit both ends and the apex this year!

The alternative is to search through google - I find it much easier!

If you put the fig tree in a pot make sure that the pot is standing on a concrete slab, otherwise the roots will grow through the drainage holes and anchor the tree to the ground. Years ago I grew a dwarf fig tree in a tub but without thinking I left the tub on the earth. Consequently very soon the roots were anchored in the ground and it was quite a hassle to remove it.
