2 watermelon questions

1. a flower has appeared on my watermelon plant, does this mean a watermelon will start developing soon?

2. their are little aphid things on it which I think may have spread from some aphid-infested salad mix I had growing near the watermelon plant, is there anything I can do, maybe wipe them off?

The flower could be a male or female, but only the females give you fruit.
I would opt for an insecticide if the plant looks unhealthy due to the infestation. There are some very cheap and effective hand-held sprays on the market that are all relatively safe to use.
