Grapevine has rooted from main branch touching ground

Yesterday I noticed that my 3 year old Perlette seedless grape vine had rooted from a mature 4 cm diameter section of branch where it had angled down and touched the soil during the last year. Today I dug it up with a nice rootball, separated it from the main part of the vine and put it in a pot until Spring.

The newly rooted section has lots of growths of 1 year old wood on it. Does anyone have tried and tested experience of rooting cuttings from 1 year old wood to share on the best way to obtain even more new cuttings?

Hi Scotsbaker and welcome to the vine. I don't know whether Perlette is a grafted vine or not just in case the branch emanated below the rootstock graft.
If not you have got yourself a second plant for no extra cost.

My favoured way of rooting vines is by softwood cuttings in a pot with a polythene bag over the top to hold moisture. I did five in a 6 inch pot last time and 3 of the 5 rooted ok, which was a good result I thought.

I never thought of softwood cuttings from grapes, since the books seem to concentrate on hardwood cuttings. I'll certainly try softwood ones this year.

I also bought the grapevine variety "Flame" last year, and have just received a delivery of "Suffolk Red and "Triomphe d'Alsace" rooted cuttings. Hope to do some winemaking in due course as well as enjoying the fruit and its juice. Many years ago I had a Mueller Thurgau vine and one year managed to collect 16 lbs of grapes which made a gallon.

My grapevines root all over the place - it was such a tangled mess I had to cut them right down and let them start again!
