If it is an old railway converted to a footpath and has no brambles already growing then someone is cutting them back on a yearly or twice yearly basis.

So I would guess that anything planted will at some time get the chop from someone.

Around here all the slip roads onto the motorway have assorted apples growing up them, quite a few along the dual carriageways and also the main roads. One big roundabout under the A1(M) has a very prolific apple growing on it. Unfortunately it is sort of "protected" by 4 lanes of traffic, and I suspect several traffic cameras.

On the A10 into Camb one layby has 4 different apple trees growing at it.

The tow path from Kingston to Ham has several apple trees along it - all bearing smallish, tart apples. They're just the thing after you've gone properly full pelt to get to the German bakery before it closes...

        Thanks for all the comments!

I definitely appreciate the point about not acting in a way contrary to the desired of the people maintaining the land... Should I decide to do anything it will be after scouting the area properly and getting a feel for it rather than ploughing in willy nilly.

The point of it is definitely to benefit the area and other people by becoming an unofficial 'guardian' not simply using the land for my own end. If I planted anything I'd make sure I kept an eye on it to make sure it wasn't going crazy.

Basically I guess using common sense and respect.
