Hi John again. Have you read the replies to your first post? http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ice_93380.html There are some links there that may help.

John, you don't say where you live. How much rainfall do you get a year? They don't like a lot of rainfall, but will cope with almost anything else.

Our local variety in the part of north-eastern Spain where I live is Empeltre. We get down to minus 17 ºC in winter, plus 44 ºC in summer in the shade. It snows here quite a lot and we also get torrential storms from time to time plus frequent droughts. These trees cope with it all. The big drawback with this variety is that it is generally grafted. No idea how you'd get hold of them or indeed any other named variety of olive tree in the UK.

If you want olives for the table, you'd be all right with one tree if it's not too wet where you live. But for oil, you'll need more... You need four to five kilos of olives for one litre of oil.

Not sure if they sell them via their on-line shop, but information of potential varieties.

I've had a look at a few UK suppliers. Strikes me there's a lot of money to be made in importing olive trees to the UK. A small tree that farmers would consider suitable for transplanting costs just a few euros apiece here in Spain and would be expected to be worth harvesting from after about four years, though a full crop would take a lot longer.

Arbequinas are quite small olives and I find them a bit bitter for both the table and in oil. But that's just me, the Catalans love them!

The only place I've seen offering named cultivars, John, is here:

I'm sure there are other places.

Lidl have olive trees for sale today. I got olive (frantoio), fig and lemon. Just going to have a try, see if it lives! If you go to Europe in Feb/ Nov you'll see fresh olives in markets for home curing, grab a few types of those I reckon would be your best bet, if you find a cheap flight! As for types - I like taggiasca (mottled green/purple) and best of all, noccellara, huge buttery green olives - sicilian I think

Could you send a picture of the label if possible? This variety says to be a Greek table olive that's what I'm looking for !

Mine is 'frantoio' (mill, in Italian), I'm afraid I didnt look at the others - It didn't even occur to me that there might be different types! They were £2.99 each
