Fruit Tree Collection (Mini Fruit Tree) - Apple Trees & Pear Trees - Thompson & Morgan

    Is this worth it ?

I was thinking of this for next year

I am not sure how the pears will cross pollinate with just one plant

Also what size pot would I need and potting mix

I did email thompson and morgan but no response

You're right to think about the pollination issues as the pear is not self fertile and would need another suitable pear of a different variety

I think you'll have the same problem with the plum needing a suitable pollination partner I'm the neighbouring area - do you know if there are pear or plum trees near by?

I think Plums are self fertile.

I have seen orange pippins website , but they grow trees but I really liked the idea of having mini trees. I am not sure why they sell it like this.

Incidentially how far do you have grow trees apart in order to cross pollinate

      Thank you

Orange Pippins website is full of info on the varieties which is the same no matter what rootstock the tree is grafted on to.

I really like mini fruit trees but prefer to buy them direct from a good nursery like blackmoor

Just buy them on dwarf rootstocks like m27 for apples.

Im not an expert but I have mine in a 30 litre pot although id like to get a slightly larger pot.

Id use a mixture of John innes number 3, compost and a bit of horticultural grit.

Thanks for that, It seems a very interesting website.

Fruit is definitely something I would like to grow for next year

When is the optimal time to buy and how do you prune fruit trees ?

If you are going for bare root trees then you need to plant them when they are dormant during winter. Trees that come in pots can be planted out any time.

Different types of fruit are pruned differently, so a plum is pruned differently to a spur bearing apple. There's also different ways of training them depending on where you have planted them e.g. fan trained, spindle bush, espalier or cordon. You Tube has loads of videos regarding this.

I remembered That in the corner of my Garden I have crab apples can that assist with the cross pollination of certain fruits , Naturally I will take a picture of them when they are out. Would the fact they grow suggest that the soil and sun is good enough to sustain a fruit tree?

Crab apples often have a long flowering time and can usually pollinate most varieties of apples. Does it produce fruit?
