Three out of my four black currennt bushes have not produce any new wood for a couple of years. Cropping is less. I think it is time for them to go to the great compost in the sky. They were Ben Sarek I think. Ideally I would like a sweeter variety if such a thing as a sweet blackcurrent exists as I would like to use as a raw dessert fruit. Can anyone make any suggestions please.

Blackcurrant variety recommendations

The sweetest blackcurrant is arguably 'Ebony' with the added bonus the fruits are large. However flavour can be influenced by conditions and soil type and even the taste buds of the consumer. If you are going to buy new bushes I'd recommend 'Ebony'. If you wish to retain your current variety you could always take some cuttings and have new bushes that way. I'd do both - two varieties are a nice contrast when eating them and you will probably prolong the fruiting season with two different varieties.

We've got Big Ben, good yield, large fruit and fairly sweet.
