  • Red Currants in Containers?

I have just read the growing guide on Red Currants but it does not mention container growing. Can anyone tell me if I can successfully grow a Red Currant in a container and what compost should be used.

    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Greg

I'm sure you can, but they are large plants, so you'll need a big container, at least 50ltr I should think, and it'll be a job keeping it from drying out in summer...

Hello bario1. Thanks you for that. Would you say the same about Blackcurrants?

      Best regards,
      Greg

Yep, from my (limited) experience, redcurrants are bigger, more vigorous bushes than blackcurrants.

I've grown both in containers but the yield is smaller. Best in the ground if possible.

I have grown a blackcurrant bush in a half barrel for the last five years. After the poor yield from it this year I have cut it down.
I think ideally they do better in the ground.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
