  • I don't know what it is?

    Hi All,

After the peanut tree showed up in the pot where I planted an orange pip, I am a little unsure of a few things growing in my greenhouse, so I thought I would turn to you and all of your wisdom and see what you thought they might be?

I know what I planted in the pots, I am just a little unsure if these are those particular plants or something that has blown in on the wind?

    The first one is this:

Finally, just to let you know, the Peanut tree is growing well and is now about 5inches tall:

I would guess at some kind of brassica for the top one, no idea on the other one...
Please will you post another photo when they're a bit bigger, so we can see how far off our answers are??

The middle, young leaf on the 2nd looks like a bit like a globe artichoke

Of course, I am watching intently as I would LOVE for them to be what I actually planted... but not sure
I will keep the thread updated.

Oooh, I like solving plant mysteries. The first one does look rather like a Brassica seedling, but I was fooled by some in my garden with seed leaves like that which turned out to be the weed Herb Robert. It has exploding seed capsules so tends to spread itself everywhere. But there are garden plants related to it called cranesbills or true Geraniums and they probably look similar as seedlings.

Number 2 I don't know. I thought at first it might actually be an orange seedling, but now I don't think so. The leaves remind me of dahlias. Is that a possibility?

Maybe if you tell us what you planted in the pots (apart from the orange pips which we already know about) we can see if they could be any of those.

I'm glad to see the peanut seedling is doing well. It won't actually be a tree but a very interesting annual plant that has small yellow flowers and then grows its seeds/peanuts underground. I have two of them flowering at the moment, which is how I recognised it.

I wanted to see why people thought without any information, but happily share what was planted.

Bear in mind these have been in the greenhouse now for around 8 weeks, so there has been no "exploding seeds" near them for at least that long.

In the first picture, the pot contained another orange pip from a Mediterranean fruit.
And the larger of the two plants, in that pot I planted an olive pit, again from a Mediterranean fruit.

            Interested to hear your thoughts

Was the olive pit from an olive preserved in brine or the like? If so, I'd be amazed if you managed to get a tree to grow from that.

There's something about the second photo that reminds me of Busy Lizzie leaves. That said, I probably haven't seen a Busy Lizzie plant for... ooh... 45 years!

Hi Snoop Puss, no the olive was eu naturale, no brine etc.

So a raw but ripe olive, straight off the tree?
