  • a right turn up

We picked all the apples today and considering the useless summer we have had, we got a really good crop, two large bins of James grieves, two of russets, one of elstar, one of unknown, I lost the label, and a overflowing large barrowful of Bramley apples, so its apple pie after the roast tomorrow. Just got to wrap and lay out the eaters in their trays and that will set us up for the winter and hope we can get all the blanched cookers into the big freezer..

Have you tried juicing some Bramleys, then freeze it?
Feed the soil, not the plants.
    (helps if you have cluckies)

Within 3 or so days just apple juice.
Also freeze it in milk containers/pop bottles/bags etc
Pastuerise in bottles just apple juice for at least 12 months.
If you want cider, mine appears to come out at approx 5%, but I tend to make and store more juice than cider.

My apples are Worcester Pearmain very tasty but the don't keep so I usually have a freezer full of slices, puree, and juice, plus they get used in jams and chutneys. Really we ought to get another tree one that we can store the apples from.

i am just imagining me with a tummy full of cider, with my mobility problems I would look like Les Kellit, the old wrestler from the sixties/seventies, who used to wobble all over the place to confuse his opponants, I am wobbly enough while sober, so I suppose it will be apple pie, aaaahhhh, never mind...

we did all the cookers today, peeling from 9am until 3.30pm, the complete barrowful, approx. 64lbs, now in pies and tubs in the big freezer, and about 9ltrs of juice, so that's that done, I counted the other day and if they were all to stay usable , the eaters would be enough for an apple each a day until the later part of April, not too bad after all the cold, rubbish weather we have this year..

You need the right cider apples to get the right taste, wine is however an option.

Years ago I used to visit Devon and Cornwall and have the odd sip of scrumpy that each pub made themselves, I spent most of the time horizontal..
