Had a snoop round my mate's garden yesterday for the first time, and found this bush with gnarled fruit on it.

Any idea what they are? I thought maybe a quince of some sort...

Is it a Japonica quince? Chaenomeles Japonica.
      Usually has thorns.

I'm guessing Japanese quince too. An actual quince quince usually has bigger fruit that looks more like a gnarly pear. Does your mate know what the flowers were like?

Agree, Chaenomeles. The fruit can be cooked just like quinces.

I can't see any thorns in your picture, but I had a look at my Japanese quince plant and it doesn't have thorns either. I have come across some very thorny ones, so it looks like they are variable in that regard. Its leaves are very much like yours.
