I seem to remember the last time I asked on here what these are? I was told they were apples, so, I would love to know what variety these apples are, anyone any ideas?
Would help if I added the picture............doh!!

Hello Burnie.
I can't find my book at the moment, but as it has quite pronounced ribs it shouldn't be too difficult (your Apple---not my book).
Do you have a photograph of a x section of it---end to end, and another through the centre.
Is it firm also what does it taste like---sour, sharp or sweet?
Size?

It's not as unique as you'd think ... Given Burnie's location and possible lack of sunshine, it could even be a red delicious. Not an easy one, cross sections, taste and a better view of the eye and flesh will help.

As well as being one of the staples it could be also be an obscure local variety.

I bought it about 10 years ago from the Dobbies GC near Dundee, I don't think it's an exotic, just not been able to identify it, I'll cut one open tomorrow and post some pictures. It's quite a dry texture and not that great a cropper, but that maybe due to the fact it is a later flowerer than my James Grieve and Howgate Wonder.

The shape certainly seems reminiscent of one of the apples you can buy in the supermarket - perhaps a little uncolored up as you are in the frozen north !

Everytime I read the title I imagine its about a Mango, pawpaw or some other exotic fruit.

Not sure Id match those - not enough ribs, no waist , no russet , the eye looks too deep and the shape of BP is mainly round.

Did you look at fruitID | Apple Identification | Apple Varieties | Apple Cultivars it looks about right in all but the eye. May be more shallow on yours - are they all like that? Also note Joan Morgan's tasting notes "Needs hot summers, grown in England often lapses into metallic, woody taste"

Does look like it, but the description doesn't match re taste and juicy as mine is dry, however, up here and with less sun it might just be. I thought the ploughman as it did originate up here and to be honest probably the Delicious is more likely coming from a garden centre, even if it is a Scottish one.

Lardman mentioned Red Delicious. The shape is certainly like it but not the colour, unless they haven't fully ripened. But is that a darker, redder one I see lurking underneath the top layer?

There are some very dark red ones still on the tree, I picked a few to ripen in the workshop. Red Delicious is certainly my front runner now, we asked for a "golden delicious" type and got this one, someone got muxed ip at the garden centre by the sound of it.
