  • Apple tree with incorrect label

I bought a tree two years ago from one of the big specialist nurseries and i let it have one apple - at the time i was pretty sure it was not the Ashmead's Kernal that i was sold. I let it fruit again this year and now i am certain that it is not.

Any ideas on what it is?

Does it not taste right for AK? It looks a little rosey but there some similarities to examples online. My AK graft didn't take so I don't have anything real to compare against. Does the tree itself look any different, being a triploid it should.

Thanks for the thought - looking at more photo's of MC has an elongated shape more towards a Pearmain type so it can be that as they are more squat and have no elongation.

I have only eaten AK once so hard to say but the apple is very different in appearance (and from memory texture). The Nursery have confirmed it is not AK but they don't know what variety it is.

I'd start investigating apples beginning with A from the same nursery. Maybe B too.

I'm not sure - looks a bit like Ellison's Orange, which is not one I've grown myself (definitely not AK)

Agreed on size and shape, however the colour doesn't looks quite right (obviously that is variable). I don't believe my mystery apple has long stalks like EO either.

I was looking also at Charles Ross but i don't think it is that either

Some places have apple shows at this time of year with experts on hand to help with identification - might be your best option if there's' one near you.

Where'd you get it from ? perhaps knowing what's available in the catalogue may help narrow down the suspects.

I've had problems too. I've identified four apple varieties out of 19 as not the ones I ordered. Plus one plum out of 12.

They came from another big nursery, with generally a very good reputation. I won't identify them at the moment, because I think they deserve the chance to sort out the mix-up first. Among the apple varieties I ordered and didn't receive were Brownlees Russet, Golden Russet and Jonagored.

I imagine firms employ staff who aren't as careful as the nursery owners and mix up at least a few every year. Now I've gone through all of my orchard, to make double sure I have what I ordered, I found that the errors all occurred with one year's deliveries and not the previous year's.

Why don't you ask Blackmores? I've always found them very helpful.

                            I have !
They have confirmed it isn't AK but they cant work out what it is. They gave me a refund and apologised.

I am mainly keen to find out for pollination reasons, also as its a good apple so i would like to know for curiosity value.

New baby in the house so cant make any of the apple days this year but that is my fallback for next year if i cant work it out in the meantime.
