I managed to pick up a half price flowering cherry. When is the best time to plant it out? It is in a pot so if I can’t plant it out this year do I need to protect the pot from frost?
Its in a pot so I can see no reason not to plant it out now to give it time to put out some roots into the warmish soil before Winter.
On your soil, mix some manure (not fert) in the planting hole and give it a good mulch with home made compost or manure.
It can be planted any time the ground is not frozen, the sooner the better.
A few things to bear in mind :- a) if its grafted, keep the graft several inches above ground level b) depending on the type it may grown to 20 ft or more tall, so have a think about what the shade will do to plants around it etc c) cherries shouldn't usually be pruned once the branches are more than 1" thick, so any shaping needs to be done on young growth and in the summer.
