In sweden we have a few men that says planting in sand 0-8 mm and giving just grasklippings as fertilizer is the absolute best. They make a sand bed 20-40 cm and they remove 100 % of the soil around the roots of the plants. Then after planting + watering they only give grasklippings twice a year as fertilizer and they say this is the absolute best way to grow everything. Soil is never really wet in winter and never totally dry in summer. Hardiness is better and the root development is great.

Anyone tried it and how is the scene in the uk?

Sounds similar to a hydroponics system using the sand as the support for the plants and nutrients being washed down from the surface.

They are either adding more than grass clippings for nutrition or the roots or growing down to the ground and feeding that way. No way is grass clippings enough. But sand is a great way of avoiding rot, I've used it in the tropics fro more dry plants to keep the base drier while allowing roots to grow down into the soil.
