  • Which cherry for Wales?

Can anyone recommend a reliable cherry for growing in Wales please - I'm thinking of training a couple of cordons so they can be netted and have been round and round the fruit catalogues but am now totally confused as to the best one to go for

Best go for the dwarfest you can find, as cordons are going to be a challenge, also be aware that not all varieties are self-fertile.

What you need to look for is resistance to fruit splitting. Try bernwode fruit trees or Cariad Cherry Fruit Tree Welsh Fruit Trees

Keepers nursery is a good place to start with good information.

For Wales and the west of England where it is generally wetter than the dry east of England, I might suggest plumping for a variety that is particularly canker resistant (a disease not helped by damp conditions), then maybe a dwarf rootstock for a small tree, but I think you might have trouble training a cherry as a cordon. They are generally trained as fans as they fruit differently to apples and pears.

Then you'll just need to defend against the birds!!
