I have moved to Cumbria and I would like to grow some fruit. I was able to grow grapes outdoors in Hertfordshire but I think they won't be a goer up here. Could anyone recommend a type of dessert apple or pear that would fruit in the North West? A type of cherry? Or is that wishful thinking? These are to be grown outdoors, I don't have a greenhouse/polytunnel yet.

We are just north of Lancaster on an exposed hill. We have an old apple tree which I'm pretty sure is ashmead's kernel but I'm trying to get a confirmed ID this year. Its a lovely apple, I like em raw after a couple of weeks storage, and they keep well although only really for cooking. Plums tend to do well unless we have late frost. But by far the easiest fruits for us are soft fruit, especially rhubarb, blackcurrants, white and red currants (most of red go to the birds), and gooseberries do well.
