  • Black Raspberries

I can resist anything except temptation.

I have impulse bought some black raspberries from B&Q. Three plants for £10 seemed like a good deal. Now I am looking up how to grow and prune them and I see they shouldn’t be grown near ordinary raspberries. This is a problem. Has anyone any experience with this fruit? Do they really get diseased growing near ordinary raspberries so quickly?

Does it say why they shouldn't be grown near other raspberries?

Apparently ordinary raspberries transmit some disease to them. All the info I got was from USA though so I’m no t even sure it applies here.

Unless you happen to have a garden in the midst of moorland or the odd 20 or 30 acres of parkland to isolate them in, you're just going to have to hope for the best.

I was informed by a grower that experienced root rot in red raspberrys that the black ones appeared to ignore it so good for wet areas. They also said they are pretty agressive at land grabbing compared to reds. However that maybe just a case of the varieties they grew. Some rhs trials stuff below

Bought them a year or so ago - no real fruit yet. Stems are attractive - bluish white. Planted in a row of summer raspberries.

I've planted some last year. Only had a few as they're still small, amazing taste. They don't tend to send new growth from the roots but the lower part of the stem so need to be pruned more like a bush than traditional raspberries.

I bought one cane two years ago. It sent up one vicious, thorny shoot which fruited last year and died back quite quick. I chopped it down to the ground, thinking it was like summer canes, but so far no sign of any new growth.

Apparently they aren’t really raspberries. I’m going to have to plant them beside some ordinary ones and just hope for the best.
They are meant to be more super fruit than blueberries.
Don’t know if I believe all the hype but. I have them now so I’ll have a go....

Will have to try these as I like to try anything different. Will most probably also try the pink lemonade blueberries.

I have a pink blueberry bush which I think will fruit this year.....
I have other blueberry bushes growing in pots as one raised bed with acid compost so I am really hopeful. Some of my sons use every bit of fruit I can grow in smoothies along with spinach and kale...
The black raspberries would definitely be a suitable addition.

They tip root as easily as blackberries, is all I know about them so far; I planted one plant last year and now have 4.
