Man you have it worse than me!
I do find fruit much easier to grow them vegetables. I never noticed much of a problem with birds on raspberries. The only thing they really eat would be the red currents and blueberries. My strawberries are all grown indoors in the poly tunnel or I think they would get them too.
You’re going to have to buy a big freezer. Totally worth it. I’m tempted to go down and get more of these fruit bushes myself.

Thanks so much Muck great tip off I took a special trip to my local one today got myself two white currants, a red currant and a hazelnut (good for a bit of fun as realise it will take a number of years to do anything) for £3 each a real bargain and as you say really healthy looking.

Concur with the miles of black plastic but certainly had kept the rootball nice and wet despite the surface being really dry. Currently having a good soak prior to planting to be sure.

Tempted to go back and get some Blueberries as the stems on all of the fruit bushes are really thick and all are showing signs of good strong buds. The rootballs are really good as well and are all damp as they are open at the top and the last rain storm had watered them well.
Just got back from B&Q with 3 redcurrents, they all look so vigourous already!! Was prepared to pay the £2 but even better as the price was slashed to a quid, how could i not take 3...?
So, I'm going to reserve a bare part of the lottie just for redcurrants. Looking forward to my bumper crop next year.

Bank on needing some sort of fruit netting system if you want to eat any - redcurrants are the top of the blackbird "we love this" chart. :-)

Agree absolutely regarding birds and redcurrants. A red currant bush will be stripped by blackbirds in a day. Whilst you are out buying a net. Every single berry.
I don’t bother to net black currants or autumn raspberries and I grow strawberries inside. However I wouldn’t consider planting a red current without first planning for a way to net it.

I went to check my local B & Q and the fruit bushes weren't on sale although they were 3 for ten pounds for some of them. They did look good but in the end I didn't bring any. I did get a bag of seed potatoes and a wilted looking rhubarb for 50p each. I did have a look in b and m, Poundland and Wilko's and ended up coming home with two blueberry bushes, a blackberry, a red gooseberry and a potted rhubarb for about £8. Every fruit bush I've had from the cheap shops has survived so I'm hopeful they'll do okay.

I remember reading somewhere that pink blueberries are not attacked by birds because they don't see colours very well. For them, pink appears the same as white, and a white fruit is usually unripe. Since they would rather eat ripe fruit, they tend to ignore pink berries. I assume it would be the same for white currant, but not sure.
