  • Fruit blossom 2018

I thought it might be interesting to share and make a note of when your various fruit trees, bushes, plants come into flower...then you can compare Year on year with last frost dates etc? ?....mostly for your personal record.

My mirabelle has been out now for about 4 weeks, but we've had some heavy frosts, so it'll be interesting to see what if it finally produces fruit ( it's about 10 yrs old hand has been zapped by the frost every year)

peach blosson is just opening ..we've not had any fruit for the last 5 years or more cos it always seems to get peach leaf curl or the frost zaps it.

Plum tree...I have 4 of these all unknown varieties...and this one flowers first. Again...no fruit yet from this one even though it's about 6 years old.

Pear tree....I have 3 different varieties ( no idea what but they are very well established) and this one flowers first - the blossoms started opening yesterday.

Last year we had no apples, plums, peaches, and only one pear tree produced fruit.
lets hope this year will be better!

    how are your plants fairing?

The Apricot tree in my small poly-tunnel has been in flower for over a week - v. pretty. A cherry tree inside the larger tunnel is in bud, and on the point of bursting (white bud stage).

A semi-ornamental plum in the garden has almost finished flowering - (petal fall) and another seedling which I grew and planted is in full flower - I thought it might be a peach but I reckon that its some sort of plum too ( poor record keeping )

Thank you VC for the link. I thought things were only 2 weeks behind but going by that I am 4-5 weeks behind. No wonder I am fretting about flowers for sale.

        Will take some pics later

Actually its a potential advantage for fruit flowering to be later - it makes the risk of them being damaged by frost much less.

My red grapefruit is in blossom for the first time. I hope some of the fruit will survive. There are also a few flowers on the lemon and the pomegranate. The lemon/lime has finished fruiting and is now full of fertilized flowers again. For years this tree was grown in a three foot piece of concrete pipe and when we moved here I planted it in the ground. It's really amazing how this tree has developed since it was replanted.

My plum tree is in full flower for the past few days.
The leaves on my gooseberry bushes are all open.
My blackcurrant bush also has leaves on now.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Then it is a toss up between the wild cherry and the Williams pear. The buds are starting to swell. The other cherries are still a way off.

My wild cherry (which is absolutely enormous and so most of the fruit is out of reach) is just starting to come into blossom on it's lower branches.
Hopefully there will be enough fruit this year to make a batch of cherry in calvados (similar to cherry brandy) mmmm....

My peach tree in the greenhouse 'died' last year after flowering so I cut back the worst looking branches and hoped for the best. Luckily this year one of the main branches bloomed again this year so I cut back the other 3 that were obviously very much dead. I'm hoping that new branches will start to appear one day...
