Melons - sunny spot outside or in greenhouse?

Anyone has experience growing melons? Is it a better idea to plant them inside the greenhouse for warmth or outside for sun?

The greenhouse is a lot warmer and better protected but it doesn't get sun for the full day. Plus it's a greenish flyaway one which diffuses the light.

The seedlings are in the greenhouse now and growing really slowly. They are Alvaro F1. (I'm not an F1 fan but they were included in a lucky dip.) Pack says suited for outdoor cultivation, will ripen fully outdoors.

Just moved to North Dorset area from NW so not sure about climate/temp here. I'd be grateful for any opinion.

Personally I reckon in the GH is a better option, as long as you have sufficient space.

If you’ve got two,you could try one in the sunniest spot of the land & one in the greenhouse. Is there something shading your greenhouse that could be pruned?

That's a good idea. I have four, so 2 in the greenhouse and 2 outside and if they survive I'll report back on this thread.

Picking melons in this country seems an impossible dream to me, we'll see.

Once GH was in a nice sunny spot but ravaged by wind so badly I had to dig it up and rebury it in the corner of the house and neighbour's fence. Gets some sun mornings and evenings but nothing could be done about the shade, short of knocking down the house and fence :-p

I grew a couple of melons in the greenhouse a few years ago. It grew to the size of a large tennis ball. I dont have a photo on my phone to update but i MIGHT have posted one the forum.
The one issue was it didn't turn yellow just stayed green. That might have been down to the greenhouse original been under a oak tree and of i remember correctly we didnt have a great summer. I might have to grow a few again next year. I'll look for a picture for you now.

I would definately put them in the GH. They really need a lot of warmth....I've tried several times. Just had a few tennis ball size. I don't bother now as I like to grow something that is a bit more productive for the space. Good Luck....and let us know how you get on.

Alvaro will grow to a decent size. I know you're all going to say, yes, but you live in Spain. Even so, I reckon you should get a good-sized melon. They're delicious too. Gorgeous perfume.

After a few practice years,I grew these emir melons last year in black buckets outside with a straw mulch & a 4 ft teepee. They do like a lot of sun

I managed to get 1 Petit Gris de Rennes from 5 seeds sown, which I planted in a bottomless tub in the greenhouse border, a couple of days ago. Fingers crossed it doesn't get snugged like one of my cukes did!
I tried another variety outside a couple of years ago, with no luck - so trying inside this time.

^Alvaro and Emir are lovely melons. You could try them. Nicky's Nursery Ogen melons have also done well for me. If I remember rightly, Baldy had some success with Emir too.

Growing melons in buckets, for me that's pretty inspiring. Do you have any other tips to get them to thrive?

With limited 'ground space' now, I have to grow more things in pots. I've only had moderate success in the past.
