Melons - sunny spot outside or in greenhouse?

I hear you. I got the pack from a lucky dip, couldn't 'offload' it on my old seed circle in the NW as no one wanted to take a chance in that weather.

The bb date is this year, these seeds are normally quite dear and I couldn't let them go to waste. So I sowed them in this sunnier, warmer piece of country.

Must say everyone here's been very encouraging! Looking at the RHS page

with their 2 buckets fertiliser and do this, that and the other, put yada in an X, stop this, start that - they make it sound incredibly complicated.

go for the greenhouse, my melon plants sulk even if there is a short grey spell. Like suggested already, try one outside to experiment, in the sunniest amd most sheltered place possible. If that works, then you can let us know and give us some tips

Water melons [sugar baby] in a good year grow to about half size of shop ones but the flavour is far better. Have several types growing at present with plenty of flowers. The best ones so far are Aldi's. Saved the seed last backend dried and cleaned it and stuck it in the fridge until ready to sow.
All depends for me on a good summer.

That really is interesting. I would expect they wouldn't come true to seed, thinking they were F1s or grafted!

Conclusion

The two greenhouse plants took off like a rocket and then were slaughtered by slugs and amounted to nothing. Both plants outside escaped the slugs, probably because they were eaten by birds.

One plant outside gave up one melon, which was also partly slug eaten but, I think it was the sweetest thing I have ever eaten in my life! It was sweeter than a spoonful of sugar, so sweet I felt queasy.

The conclusion should be - they're better outside, given the hot days we had, Maybe if I protected the greenhouse plants they might've done better despite the shade.

Your photos are probably too big.
If you are using a phone use the edit function and crop some off the side and bottom - it doesn't need to be much.
If they are on your computer use a photo editor software to reduce your image. There's plenty of free ones available.
