  • Apple Tree Help

I have 5 semi-dwarf trees in my garden, 3 of which are apple trees. I’ve just noticed brown/copper marks on lots of leaves on one of the apple trees..

This has only happened in the last few days and this is only affecting one of the trees.

What’s causing this and is there anything I can do to save the tree?

It could be scab which isn't fatal to the tree, indeed if you peel the fruit you can still eat them, just looks unsightly and the fruit won't store either, you can spray, but it might be too late for this year as once the flowers are open you can't risk killing the pollinators.

Ok thanks, I’m not too concerned this year because that tree has the fewest flowers. I’ll look into something to treat it ready for next year.

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it gets more extensive, always a bit of scab about and doing anything effective about it on a tree whose fruit you are going to eat is tricky.

I use this on my apple trees, but as I said, not once the flowers are open, when the fruit are set I will spray again.

I have 3 apples, last year one got scab quite badly (Cox self fertile) so I removed all the leaves affected (to try and break the fungal life cycle) and it seems to be doing better this year (although it hasn't flowered yet). It did drop it's fruitlets (2) last year, but that might be more down to the weird weather and it was newly planted.
The other two trees are unaffected. Seems Cox is a bit prone to scab (and everything else).
