  • Novice gardener - tomato help

    Hello,

I’m just back from a two week holiday where we didn’t have anyone to water our plants. I used some slow watering systems for my tomatoes but as it’s been so hot they’re looking quite sad. I’ve snipped off any completed dead stems and this is what’s left. I’ve put a few photos in here - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4...UlTX0JLdUdTSUk

Any advice for bringing this back to it’s best? You can see the vines where many tomatoes would have grown, with these ever come back to life or will the tomatoes I can see be the only ones to ripen?

There are also some small black flies on the plants. Any tips on how to get rid of them too?

New to having a garden so new to growing anything, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks so much,
    Rachel

Can't see the pics, but without sounding facetious, water them. a lot.

can you fill anything bigger than the pot they are in and put the pots in that?

It's not all the answer, but it's a start. if they are leafy, cut back the foliage so they can't pump out nore water than they are getting in

Best to follow the advice already given on watering - also examine any fruit on the plants for damage like wrinkling or rot, and cut of those fruits so the plant can put its energy in to the others.

Likewise no access to see the photos.
As long as the plants get enough water and feed (try adding a few drops of liquid feed to the water) from now on, they should recover enough to grow more shoots which will flower and fruit later.

Sorry everyone the link is now shareable so you should have access.

I gave them a big drink as soon as we got home yesterday and another big one this morning.

I've cut off all the leaves that looked completely dead but maybe I'll trim some more.

I'll try some feed too. All the fruits currently look ok, no cracking or strange colouration but will definitely keep an eye on them.

I think they look pretty good to say they've been left for two weeks. I'm not experienced enough to say how they will do now, but it's got to be a good start that they aren't completely dead!
