  • Summer raspberry plants - leaves yellowing... browning... dying... Any ideas?

    Hi all

Some of my summer raspberry plants are looking quite sorry for themselves I wondered if anyone with experience and/or knowledge might know what is causing it. Below are some photos.

Could it be as simple as lack of water? Obviously it has been very hot, and I go for the heavy water once a week approach. Maybe I've not done enough, although in all honesty it's usually the case that I overdo watering!

    Many thanks

Too dry, probably. Some of mine look like that.
Have they finished fruiting? if so, the canes die off this year anyway.

I believe the canes that produced fruit are supposed to die off once they have finished fruiting. I *think* you're supposed to cut them off once they are dead and the new growth you get is what will bear fruit next year.

I'm on a meter so never water. Mine are much worse than that, though this years canes are still green so I should get a return next year. This year it was so dry that some fruit dried on the plant. Hoping my Autumn canes will be better. Cut the dead canes out.

I am considering taking all. My summer canes out and replacing with Autumn ones. I get a much better crop from these.

          Hi

Many thanks for the responses and tips.

OK, so it's looking like the heatwave may be the cause then... They are still fruiting, but perhaps I'll remove the worst and let the others do their thing whilst still fruiting.

For the record, when do summer raspberries usually come to an end?

I agree @Scarlet; our autumns tend to fruit better.

The only thing of slight concern I have is that some of the summer raspberry's next year canes have brown dying leaves on. Is that anything to worry about?

          Ta

I’d just give them a good soak if you can - as you’ve been doing really. I wouldn’t worry too much about nexts years stems - they should be fine. ( mulch well in the Autumn/Spring) I’ll post a photo of mine later. Mine were a bit depressing given how much space they take up.

Mine haven’t been good this year either, very short and not a lot of fruit. They have stopped fruiting now and are looking a lot like yours!
