  • Jostaberry training

Has anyone been successful in training a Jostaberry ? either in cordons or a fan etc ?

I have purchased a one and i hope to train it in a space on a 6 foot high fence by 5 foot but not a lot of depth as i need it for accessing other plants therefore i thought of training it as a multi cordon or fan. I have read they can be quite vigorous.

    Grateful for any tips

My Jostaberry is about 9' high - I don't think cordon type training would work because they fruit like blackcurrants ie mostly on new wood - fan training would likely be a possible option - my feeling is that for most people with limited space, blackcurrants are a better choice as they take up less room and they crop almost as well, with better flavour - the Jostas are easier to pick and so far, disease free.

Yeah I think it may be difficult to grow the Josta up the fence but from what I can understand blackcurrants need to be grown as a bush and I have not got the depth of space for that so i think that counts that one out too.

Mine is about 5ft tall and just as wide along the bed, but I just chop off any branches that stick out over the paths, back and front. So yes, a large bush but it can be trimmed to fit.

There's a guy on youtube who grows jostaberries as an espallier. It might be somewhere on this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP4i9--NKks
