Just noticed that there are some rust like blotches on some of the leaves of my new apple [Discovery] tree. Any idea what they are. Unable to post photos at present.
Thank you.
Bob.
Most likely scab. Don't worry too much most apple trees get a bit of this, its none too serious.
Make sure you are watering well in this drought though - better a couple of times a week, but really do a job, letting a hose run reasonably hard for 30 mins or so - your aiming to get the area near the roots soaked so that the water gets down deep, not just wets the surface.
Thanks for your reply. Have the tree in a large pot sitting in a large basin because of the hot weather.
I always assume the worst for some unknown reason.
Bob.
If it's a scab, it's better to take some measures before leaves started to fall. It won't take a lot of time. Rake under trees and destroy infected leaves to reduce the number of fungal spores available to start the disease cycle over again next season. Larger plantings should be treated with neem oil, mixed at a rate of 2 tablespoons per gallon and applied with a sprayer once weekly.
I have just given it a real pruning before it comes into leaf in the hope of getting some regeneration and the tree not having to work as hard getting water and nutrients higher up. If this doesn't work I'll replace it next year with something else.
