  • Blackberry question.

    Hi,

On my new plot a have a very over grown hedge which I have several blackberries canes growing through it.

I've never had much luck with blackberries at all. But these blackberries are giving out a bumper crop.

My query is if I cut the hedge and blackberries back this year will I get, in theory, a crop next year. Can I be ruthless cutting them back or will they need cutting back a little every year?

    Thanks

Blackberries fruit on last years canes fso all the canes that have fruit on this year (and any older or dead or weak) should be cut out completely when dormant).

Any new canes this year will produce fruit next year so cutting them back drastically will limit the harvest, you can however cut them back somewhat (say to 4 foot) which will encourage side shoots to form on them this year all of which will bear more fruit next year.

On my previous lottie I trained a plant in 2directions along the fence line.
I cut back one side one year and the other side the next so I always had fruit but managed to contain it's spread.
