Buy some Miracle Grow compost, I have never seen so many/big mushrooms as those growing in my window boxes
One was so big it pushed a Surfina right out of the soil!

WHAT i do is to obtain a nice biggish log, not too heavy to carry, drill some holes in and insert Buy Mushroom Shiitake Plugs online from Suttons into it and I always put mine underneath my muck pile, which is covered with tarpaulin and they romp away.

                Hope this helps

Only tried mushrooms once under the greenhouse staging but nothing happened! Or so I thought..........the following year I had a wonderful crop of mushrooms the size of dinner plates!

You need to investigate the type of log you need. I saw those plugs at a garden show and he wanted £6 for the plugs and £20 for a plugged log. As I have about 10 ton of cut Liandi piled in the garden. But this is not suitable, as its too sappy.

Sites that sell impregnated plugs suggest a freshly cut birch log. Never tried so can't comment I'm afraid.
