  • Showing off the sexy new path

My brother just came to see me and brought 3 bags of bark chippings up from my Mum's where they've just mulched a load of trees. So I put weed suppressant matting down on my veg path and barked over the top.

I'm pretty impressed with how good it looks, I only really did it so it was more comfortable to kneel down in.

And by-the-way, she lives in Doveridge,Derbyshire. Anyone who wants some chippings, I'm sure she'd be more than happy for you to collect some, she cut down some 20-odd huge leylandii and mulched them all. Just PM me.

Still got a bag spare, was thinking of mulching under the beans with it, is that a recommended idea?

      Absolutely not
Because rotting bark takes nitrogen out of the soil, and your beans will suffer.

Glad I checked. Sounds like very few plants would benefit from a bark mulch then.

I've discovered another draw-back already. Rain makes it soaking and it sticks to my shoes!

You'll need to re-do it every year, because it will rot down. You'll probably get a few fungi too, but nothing to worry about.

Nice work, and nice raised beds too. Just watch out that you need to keep "topping up" your paths on a regular basis.
