Alice, thank you so much for posting your pictures. They prove that you can grow veg and still have a lovely garden to look at. You have also given me a bit more confidence to have a go at squash. I grew green courgettes last year (as we eat loads) and although they tasted good, I didn't get many - they tended to go all yukky! I'm going to have another go next year though. I have a circular plot next to my new greenhouse which has flowers in it. I have decided to dig it all out and make a veg plot. It will probably be a disaster but I might try and put photos showing my progress from what it looks like now onwards.

Look forward to seeing your pics Jools. You can see my peppers in the pic. I just cut them off the plant yesterday, and my last squash. Boo hoo ... I've eaten them all. Must grow more next year. The pepper did very well but I don't know what variety it is as I bought it as a baby plant in Dobbies for 40p. I'm overwintering the plant and keeping seeds. I have some in the airing cupboard for a germination viability test and they look as if they are germinating, so I will keep them to grow more next year.

About your courgettes going yukky. Did you take the flowers off. If the flowers stay on they tend to rot at the blossom end . I always help them off. If they have started to go soft at the end I dry them on a bit of paper and they usually "calcify" over.

Good luck with courgettes next year.

Just had a look at your blog Alice, your garden is lovely, you must have a nice little microclimate around you as it does look like the continent & not bonny Scotland!

Scotland! Gosh, yes I can see now - West Dumbarton. I thought you must be in Malta or somewhere like that. It's an awsome garden, Alice. Not sure I dare post any pics now!
Thanks for the tips on courgettes. Yes, I did leave the flowers on...but I shall be taking them off next year.
I have been swanning around in my new greenhouse today. The sun was shining and I was just taking in all that lovely space......

Good luck with your green house Jools. If you are going to heat it have you thought about insualtion - bubble wrap. No the garden is not awesome - just 20 years work. My husband and I started it about 20 years ago from nothing. Everything there has been grown from seed, cuttings or the smallest, cheapest , plants we could find, and grown on from there.

I will try to update my profile to show more clearly that I am in Scotland. If you want to put a face to the name, I think you can see my pic under members profile.

Just to encourage any newbies thinking about growing some food. This is some spring onions I pulled today (dec 6th) I grow them in troughs and have them almost all the year round.
Now you know just how loopy I am, posting a pic like this.
