My first female flowers!

When i saw the first one and saw it was yellow i thought it was dead but i found another yellow one which was a relief i hope its been fertilised even though theres no male flowers about.. apart from a slightly shrivelled one and a few unopened buds but theres a farm shop up the road that grows pumpkins so im staying optimistic

was about to give up on these since they havent turned out to be the "sprawling vines" that were described.. theyve basically stayed the same size as they were in their 6 inch pots so im well happy (my first time growing pumpkins)

Stick with it, they will take off some time soon..just give them plenty of water etc, and a little bit of tlc

It is still early days so if they fall off, don't despair - that means they weren't fertilised properly. My plant lost its first few but is going great guns now.

Only my Atlantic Giants are sprawling vines and thanks to the Foxes there is only one of them left now. All the others, Turks Turban, Invincible and Son of Pumpy (seeds from the plant that was grown from the seeds of the supermarket pumpkin) are all bush like.
Think it just depends on the variety.

It is early yet and there are a couple of weeks left before fertilisation should happen, given that the winter seemed to last forever this year, it may be a bit later than usual.

With that in mind and due to Foxy, I planted 6 more Atlantics and put them under a sort of greenhouse, after 5 days they were up and after 10 they are at the third leaf stage, the seedling leaves are huge. I simply don't know if they will produce anything, from what I read, It might be too late, looking at the photos on my blog, maybe not. But I will admit its cutting it fine!

unfortunately they didnt get pollinated but i hand pollinated one today and ive got one thats starting to swell up

i still dont understand why the immature fruits under the flower are yellowy orange and when i google hundredweight pumpkins the fruits under the female flowers are green

Hundredweights are from the same family as Atalntic giants, Cucurbita Maxima, and are often yellow at first. Regular pumpkins are Cucurbita Pepo and start out as green fruit.

I sound like an expert don't I?

Was actually wondering the same thing as my Atlantic was yellow.

I worked for a time with a bloke who was a Garden Carpenter and whilst he is a very good carpenter, he too picked up that when talking about gardening, chuck in a few latin words and suddenly you are a gardening guru!

I do however believe that in this case, what I said above is a correct explanation.
I also read that the two families cannot cross pollinate, this I'm not so sure but haven't put it to the test.
