Roitelet, if I had parsnips like that I would show off too. Well, there's always next year.
Any idea why your pics won't expand ?

Oh congratulations! Fab parsnip! What variety was it?

Alice, some of our pics don't expand either sometimes, and I wonder if Trousers downsizes them for some reason when he transfers them from camera to 'puter file. One of cottage on our blog came out naturally that size because he'd previously downsized it for his first avator.
Other than that suggestion, not the faintest!

        Hi Folks,

Sorry the pictures won't expand, no idea why. Anyway a large size pic of me might be just too frightening

The parsnip vareity is White Gem but I have to use the iron bar method of planting as my soil is very stoney. It wasn't the longest one but all the others broke when I dug them.

Congratulations roitelet! That looks a very fine parsnip!

What is the iron bar method? My soil is very stoney too and they end up forking out...

That is very impressive. No wonder you posed so well. It's like an old fashioned page from a WI calendar before they went all semi-nude.

                  Thanks for the complements everyone.

The Iron Bar method is - Take 1 iron bar or poker (fires for the use of) and plunge it into the soil about 1' deep then work it round to produce a funnel shaped hole. Fill this with sifted soil plant 6 or so seeds on the top and thin to 1 plant.

The other reason that yor parsnips are forking Feather is that there may be too much nutrient in the ground. I always plant mine on ground that was well composted for the previous years crop and I then add general purpose fertilizer, leaf mould and also some sand. The leaf mould and sand I only add as my soil apart from being full of flint is also clay and I want to lighten it a bit.

Best of luck and we look forward to seeing the results
