  • My First Ever Cauliflowers (The Ones I Thought I Had Messed Up)

I posted a few weeks ago that I thought I had failed my cauliflowers, as the leaves were so huge and no sign of a curd. Its the first time I have ever grown any brassicas of any kind and I was convinced I hadnt been feeding enough. Well, I have an update!

I cannot quite express the buzz I felt when I peeked inside my cauliflowers tonight and saw this:

This one has black spotty things all over it - I am not sure what they are - I presume they are eggs or bugs. Will it be ok to eat once washed? Muesli, my elderly bunny rabbit, is going to have an absolute field day !

If you had asked me just a couple of years ago if I would be so excited as I am now from gardening, I would have thought you were barmy!! Now I think its the bees knees!!

Looks great to me - I love cauliflower. A quick rinse and some cheese sauce should see it right.
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel paths with broken dinner-knives. ~ Rudyard Kipling

So glad that your caulies are so good. As for the black spotty things - without being too indelicate, it is caterpillar **** - just rinse it off and get cooking. Enjoy!

Thank you - being rinsed and rinsed and rinsed again as I type (thanks to my other half). It was covered in green slimy stuff so I think you are right - eurgh, gross. Puts you off a bit!

Why would it put you off? Look at it as being a part of your cauliflower that has been recycled!

I guess so. I'm just not used to seeing *ahem* excrement on my food!

It was very tasty though I must say.

yups, caterpillars aren't the most hygeinic beasties with their toilet behaviour but a quick sploosh under a running tap gets rid of the mess. My granny used to say what you don't know about doesn't bother you and you know, she was correct
