  • Bare Rooted Raspberries

Hoping someone can give me a little advice.

I have been given some bare Rooted Raspberry plants. Trouble is the place where I would like to plant them needs clearing and I won't be able to do this for a while. How long will the canes last in a cool greenhouse before being planted out or can I plant them up individually in those tall pots that fruit plants usually come in from the garden centre and plant them in a few weeks or in the spring. Don't really want to waste them, being such a nice gift. Some are summer fruiting the others later.

    Many thanks

Either bung them in the ground, or a pot to stop them drying out. I did that when I was clearing my patch - I'm overrun the bloomin' things now!

yes, heel them in until you are ready for them. Much better than risking them drying out.

Morrison buckets? Old compost sack? Carrier bag even!

As long as they are in moist compost, they will be ready to plant out where you need them next year. By putting them in a container of some sort, any roots that grow next year whilst waiting for their new site will be undisturbed in the compost ready for transplanting.

I did that two years ago and they are still in the bucket I will put them in my new plot next year, honest.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I agree, pot them up and keep them moist and they should do fine. Will you let us know when you have them planted? I'd love to see how they turn out for you!
