  • Show leek seeds

    Hi all !
I've just sent away for some leek seeds from eBay just for a bit interest over the winter months.
Does anyone know when I should plant them ?

    Thanks for looking

Sowed mine April / May time and planted out mid July. I've grown Musselburgh and Lyon 2.

it isn't normal to try to grow leeks for exhibition from seed because of the differing results which are likely to stem from that method of propogation. Exhibtion leeks are normally frown from pips/grass because that being a vegetative method of propogation will result in virtual clones of the parent plant being the end result. As all resulting leeks should be identical, that fulfills one of the important criteria viz. uniformity.

They aren't going to provide much entertainment this winter. They get sown early in the new year

          Thanks for the advice !
Is it hard to get hold of pips/grass and if so would you sow these in the spring ?

If you sow something like Mammoth Pot/Blanch leek seeds on traditionally New Years day and give them the requisite ammount of heat and light you should get reasonable results.

I have a few home grown pot leek grass which I will probably plant in October.

Grow lights and heat mean that show growers set stuff away at strange times of the year.

I think the idea is to find the date of the show and know how long it will take your leeks to attain maximum size then sow accordingly.

            Good luck with your project.
