  • Freak or Unique?

    Hi,

Well, this is the first carrot of the season! Despite its absurd appearance it tasted better than shop bought carrots and managed to feed 5 adults!!!

You could never buy one like it in ASDA....

Good grief - all that from just one carrot?! I bet washing it was fun!

Hi Clare, bet it tasted just as good as all the perfect straight ones if not better. A few years ago (well quite a few really!) you could have sent it to Esther Rantzen on 'That's Life' for their peculiar veg. section.

            Hi,

Not sure if its one carrot, or I didn't thin them properly! Can't wait to dig up the rest now! It tasted fantastic, lightly boiled with a bit of sugar and salt.

You're right you wouldn't get a carrot like that in ASDA ClaireG. Good looking carrot. If not roasted, I like mine lightly boiled, then sauted in a little butter and sugar - and maybe a bit of mustard.

                  Not as unique...

                  Hi

So it turns out my freaky carrot was not as unique as I thought! Here are a few more I pulled up!

Guess I have a knack for growing strange carrots.

                    Cool carrots
Methinks you either had too much manure on your patch or the ground is very stony. Both these can cause forking such as you have.
Doesn't have any effect on taste as you have found out, just don't expect to win any prizes at the local show !!

I'd say if you're going to eat them it doesn't matter. It's only if you want to win prizes that it matters - or sell them like Rat does.

Ah, I see where I have gone wrong! This is my first year at growing carrots, and I put compost in with the soil when I sieved it! I'll remember for next year that carrots don't like rich soil. Also, that part of the allotment flooded a few weeks ago so maybe the soil had compacted too much and the carrots forked?

PS They still taste good though!

Clareg, try growing short stumped varieties, they might be better suited to your soil..

                            I've got a straight one!

Hoorah, after 15 or so wonky carrots, I've finally got one, yes just one, straight one!!

                            It's an Autumn King variety.

haha, those messages above about not winning prizes - to me, they look like prime contenders for a certain category in a certain show ......
