  • Its On - The Virtual Vegetable Show

After much scurrying about behind the scenes we now have the go ahead for a -

    VIRTUAL VEGETABLE SHOW.

Categories and more details will be posted shortly but with the show in mind, do start taking pictures of your fruit, veg and flowers ready for entry.

Brilliant Piglet. I've got my camera out - hope everyone else has theirs. I just love to see what everybody is growing. Hope we get the categories soon.
I was going to rip out my shot Endive - maybe there's a prize for that.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Maybe have a chance in the biggest slug category if there is one! Not got much else to show off!

Well, I had the biggest french spanish pepper i have ever grown, but unfortunately i cut it yesterday, fried it in olive oil and salt and had it for my lunch>

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Fantastic! Can't wait to see if the Prize Pumpkin at the Hill can be a contender!

Can we do Tallest Sunflower too?

Below is a provisional list of categories subject to final tweaking.

An exhibit using flowers from your garden or allotment
              1 specimen rose bloom
              1 spike of gladioli
1 vase of 3 blooms of dahlias
              1 potted house plant
              tallest sunflower

              A plate of 10 blackcurrants
A plate of 10 other berries
              3 sticks of rhubarb
3 items of fruit (same or mixed) not listed above

3 onions over 250g shown as grown
              3 onions over 250g dressed
              pair of cucumbers
A dish of 3 potatoes, same cultivar
A dish of 5 pickling shallots max diameter 30mm
5 carrots of 1 variety, tops trimmed to approx 8cm
              3 beetroot with leaves
              3 beans, french or runner
              3 courgettes 10-20cm long
              A bunch of 12 radishes
              5 tomatoes any variety
A truss of cherry tomatoes with the majority ripe
              Biggest pumpkin
              Biggest marrow
              longest runner bean
              Any other vegetable
Strangest shaped veg (naturally occuring, so no rude carvings please)

I suggest that you start taking those pictures now, where prudent with a ruler for scale or size.

I wont be entering, have nothing to shout about, but bring it on - I can't wait to see all the entries and hear about the judging!
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance

Is there a limit to the number of times you can enter each category?
Are there preferred display methods (i.e. on white plate)?
Will you all promise not to laugh?!
When can we start posting our photos?
                      When's the closing date?
If there's a floral display category (i.e. cut flowers), can there be a hanging basket category too?

Is the biggest pumpkin measured by weight or diameter?

I might be okay in the strange shaped veg category!! There isnt one for green tomatoes, think I'd do well there too! Hmmm, I'll have to look at my plot tonight through different eyes ...

                            Very exciting! I love shows!

I have a quick gander at the categories and just a small sugestion.......you might want to explain what 'dressed' under the onion section means as those that don't show won't have a clue what you mean! Although i suppose you might end up with pictures of onions in little trousers and jackets - that would be fun!

There are other examples no doubt where you may need an explanation of the 'showing' term
There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted
                            Happy Gardening!
